How to Convert Speed Units: A Step-by-Step Guide

Speed conversions follow the same logic as all unit conversions: multiply by the right factor, or divide if going the other direction. The challenge with speed is keeping track of which direction you're converting and which factor applies to which pair of units.

This guide walks through conversions step by step, with worked examples for each common pair.

The Method: Multiply by a Conversion Factor

Every speed unit conversion reduces to multiplying by a constant. The factors are fixed — 1 mph is always 1.60934 km/h. The only thing to get right is the direction: multiplying converts up (from a smaller unit to a larger expressed value like mph → km/h where the number gets bigger); dividing converts down.

A reliable way to avoid errors: set up the conversion as a fraction where the unwanted unit cancels. To convert 60 mph to km/h: 60 mph × (1.60934 km/h ÷ 1 mph) = 96.56 km/h. The 'mph' in the numerator and denominator cancel, leaving km/h.

Worked Examples

Example 1: 75 mph → km/h
  75 × 1.609344 = 120.70 km/h

Example 2: 90 km/h → mph
  90 × 0.621371 = 55.92 mph

Example 3: 25 knots → km/h
  25 × 1.852 = 46.30 km/h

Example 4: 30 m/s → km/h
  30 × 3.6 = 108 km/h (exact)

Example 5: 55 mph → m/s
  55 × 0.44704 = 24.59 m/s

Sanity check: m/s values should always be much smaller
than km/h values (÷ 3.6 relationship).

Avoiding Errors

  • Before converting, write the units next to your number: '75 mph', not just '75'.

  • After converting, check the direction makes sense: km/h should be bigger than the mph equivalent (since km/h values are larger numbers for the same speed).

  • m/s values should be roughly 3.6× smaller than km/h values — a quick sanity check.

  • For chain conversions (mph → m/s → ft/s), convert one step at a time to avoid error accumulation.

  • If you need to convert from knots to mph, remember knots are slightly larger: 1 knot > 1 mph (by about 15%).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert m/s to mph?

Multiply m/s by 2.23694. Example: 10 m/s × 2.23694 = 22.37 mph. Or use the two-step: multiply by 3.6 to get km/h, then multiply by 0.621371 to get mph.

How do I convert knots to km/h?

Multiply knots by 1.852. This is the exact conversion (1 nautical mile = 1852 meters, exactly). Example: 20 knots × 1.852 = 37.04 km/h.

Is mph bigger or smaller than km/h?

1 mph is bigger than 1 km/h. One mph equals 1.609 km/h — so when you convert mph to km/h, the number gets larger. Going the other way (km/h to mph), the number gets smaller.
