How to Measure Ring Size at Home

Measuring your ring size at home gives a result accurate enough for most ring purchases. The three common methods — paper strip, string, and existing ring — each take about 5 minutes and require no special tools. The goal is to find your inner finger circumference in millimeters, which you can then convert to US, EU, UK, or Japanese ring sizes.

Before measuring: do it in the evening (fingers swell slightly during the day), at room temperature (cold shrinks fingers; warmth expands them), and on the specific finger you intend to wear the ring on.

Method 1: Paper Strip (Most Accurate)

Cut a strip of paper about 1 cm wide and 10 cm long. Wrap it snugly around the finger you want to measure — just below the knuckle, which is usually the widest point. Mark where the paper overlaps. Remove the strip and measure the length from the end to the mark in millimeters. This is your inner circumference.

Look up your EU size directly from this measurement — EU sizes are inner circumference in mm. Convert to US: US size = (circumference − 36.2) ÷ 2.63. Or use the ring size converter.

Method 2: String Method

Use a piece of string or dental floss — something that does not stretch. Wrap it around the finger just below the knuckle. Mark or cut where the string ends meet. Lay the string flat against a ruler and measure the length in millimeters. This is your circumference.

Be careful with string — it can stretch or compress. Pull it snug but not tight. The string should lie flat against the finger with no gaps but not be pressing into the skin.

Method 3: Existing Ring

If you have a ring that already fits the correct finger, measure its inner diameter with a ruler. Place the ring on a piece of paper, trace the inside, and measure across the circle in mm. This directly gives you the diameter.

Alternatively, use a ring sizing cone or download a printable ring sizer template. Stack the ring over the printed circles until you find the matching size.

Converting Measurements to Ring Sizes

From circumference (mm):
EU size = circumference (this is exact)
  Diameter (mm) = circumference ÷ π (÷ 3.14159)

From diameter (mm):
  US size = (diameter − 11.52) ÷ 0.832

Quick reference:
  Circ 49mm → Diam 15.6mm → US 5 → EU 49 → UK J½
  Circ 52mm → Diam 16.5mm → US 6 → EU 52 → UK L½
  Circ 54mm → Diam 17.2mm → US 7 → EU 54 → UK N½
  Circ 57mm → Diam 18.2mm → US 8 → EU 57 → UK P½
  Circ 62mm → Diam 19.8mm → US 10 → EU 62 → UK T½

Quick Tips

  • Measure 3 times and use the average to reduce error.

  • Measure in the evening — fingers are up to half a size larger in the evening than in the morning.

  • Cold fingers are smaller. If measuring in a cold environment, warm your hands first.

  • For wide band rings (over 5 mm), go half a size up — wide bands fit tighter than narrow ones at the same inner diameter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is measuring ring size at home?

With the paper strip method and careful technique, home measurement is typically accurate to within half a US size. This is sufficient for most ring purchases. For expensive or non-resizable rings, visit a jeweler for a professional measurement.

What if my knuckle is much wider than the base of my finger?

Size for the knuckle — the ring must pass over it. If there is a large discrepancy, consider a ring with a hinged or expandable shank that closes to fit the smaller base.

Can I measure someone's ring size while they sleep?

It is not recommended. Sleep causes slight swelling and the finger relaxes, giving a larger measurement than the awake daytime size. Use Method 3 with an existing ring they wear instead.

Are ring sizes the same for all fingers?

No — each finger is a different size. The ring finger (fourth finger) is typically the target finger. Measure the specific finger the ring will be worn on.
