How to Compare Unit Prices
Unit pricing divides the total price by the quantity to find the cost per unit. This lets you compare a 16 oz bottle at $3.49 against a 32 oz bottle at $5.99 on equal terms — even though the prices and quantities are different.
Formula
Unit price = Total price ÷ Quantity Example: Product A: $3.49 ÷ 16 oz = $0.218 per oz Product B: $5.99 ÷ 32 oz = $0.187 per oz ← Better value
FAQ
Are supermarkets required to show unit prices?
In many US states and several countries (UK, EU, Australia), retailers are legally required to display unit prices on shelf labels alongside the product price. If your store shows unit prices, compare them directly. If not, this calculator does the math for you.
Is the larger size always the better deal?
Not always. While bulk sizes are often cheaper per unit, sometimes stores use 'shrinkflation' (reducing quantity while keeping the price the same) or price promotions that make smaller sizes temporarily better value. Store brands in smaller sizes can also beat name-brand bulk sizes. Always calculate before assuming.
What units can I use?
Any unit works as long as you are consistent between the two products. Compare oz to oz, grams to grams, count to count, fluid ounces to fluid ounces. Comparing a liquid product in fluid ounces against a dry product in weight ounces would give a meaningless comparison.
Does this account for sale prices?
Yes — enter the actual sale price (not the regular price) to compare the real deal. If a product is buy-one-get-one-free, divide the total you pay by the total quantity you receive.
