Conversion Formula
kW = W ÷ 1,000 Example: 1,500 W ÷ 1,000 = 1.5 kW Appliance anchors: LED bulb 9 W = 0.009 kW Laptop charger 65 W = 0.065 kW Microwave 1,000 W = 1 kW Space heater 1,500 W = 1.5 kW Central AC 3,500 W = 3.5 kW Level 2 EV charger 7,200–19,200 W = 7.2–19.2 kW DC fast charger up to 350,000 W = 350 kW
Frequently Asked Questions
How many watts are in a kilowatt?
Exactly 1,000 watts. The prefix kilo always means one thousand, so 2 kW is 2,000 W and 0.5 kW is 500 W. To convert watts to kilowatts, move the decimal point three places to the left.
How many kilowatts does a microwave use?
Most countertop microwaves are rated 0.8–1.2 kW (800–1,200 W). Note that the 'wattage' on the box is usually cooking power — the electrical draw is 30–50% higher, so a '1,000 W' microwave may pull about 1.4 kW from the outlet.
What does a 7 kW EV charger mean in watts?
7 kW equals 7,000 watts. At that rate, a typical EV gains roughly 25 miles of range per hour of charging. For comparison, a standard US wall outlet tops out around 1.4 kW (1,400 W) — which is why Level 1 charging is so slow.
Is a higher wattage appliance always more powerful?
It always draws more electricity, but 'power' in the useful sense depends on efficiency. A 9 W LED produces the same light as a 60 W incandescent; a 1,000 W inverter microwave can outcook an older 1,100 W model. Wattage tells you the operating cost, not necessarily the performance.
