Tip Calculator Guide
A tip calculator takes the pre-tax (or post-tax) bill amount, your desired tip percentage, and the number of people splitting the bill, and outputs the tip amount, total per person, and total bill. It is useful at restaurants, for delivery orders, and any service context where tipping applies.
This guide explains the inputs, common tip percentages by situation, and how to use the calculator effectively for groups.
How Tip Calculation Works
Tip amount = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100) Total = Bill + Tip amount Per person = Total ÷ Number of people Example: $85 bill, 20% tip, 3 people Tip = $85 × 0.20 = $17.00 Total = $85 + $17 = $102.00 Per person = $102 ÷ 3 = $34.00 Example: $85 bill, 18% tip, 4 people Tip = $85 × 0.18 = $15.30 Total = $100.30 Per person = $100.30 ÷ 4 = $25.08
Standard Tip Percentages
US restaurants: 15% is adequate (considered the low end), 18–20% is standard for good service, 25% is generous, and 30%+ is exceptional. Tips below 15% are generally understood as a comment on the service. Counter service and takeout: $1–2 per transaction, or no tip — cultural norms are evolving here.
Delivery: 10–15% of the order total or $3–5 minimum (whichever is larger), more for large orders or difficult conditions. Bartenders: $1–2 per drink for standard service, more for complex cocktails. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night, left daily.
Splitting the Bill Fairly
Even splits: add the tip to the total, divide equally. This is simplest and most common for groups of friends. Itemized splits: each person pays their share of food + an equal share of the tip. This is fairer when orders vary significantly in price.
Automatic gratuity: many US restaurants add an 18% gratuity automatically for parties of 6 or more. Check the bill before adding another tip. The line item will say 'gratuity' or 'service charge.'
Quick Tips
- ✓
For 20%: move the decimal left one place (10%) and double. $47 → $4.70 × 2 = $9.40.
- ✓
For 15%: find 10%, halve it, add the two. $47 → $4.70 + $2.35 = $7.05.
- ✓
Use the calculator for group bills — mental math with tax, tip, and splits gets complicated quickly.
- ✓
Some credit card receipts leave the tip line blank even when automatic gratuity was applied. Check before writing in an additional amount.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Technically, tipping on pre-tax is correct since tax is not part of the service. In practice, most Americans tip on the post-tax total — the difference is small.
Is it ok to not tip at all?
In the US, skipping a tip at a full-service restaurant is understood as a strong negative signal about service quality and can have real financial impact on the server. In most contexts, leaving something (even 10%) is preferable to leaving nothing.
Do I tip if I have a coupon or discount?
Yes — tip on the original (pre-discount) price, not the discounted total. Servers provide the same service regardless of what discount you applied.
How does splitting the bill work in the calculator?
Enter the pre-tip bill total, your tip percentage, and the number of people. The calculator returns tip amount, total bill, and per-person amount — assuming an even split.
