Unit Price Comparison Guide

Unit price is the price per standard unit of measurement — per ounce, per gram, per liter, per item. Comparing unit prices reveals which product size or brand is actually cheaper, regardless of the headline price or package size.

Grocery stores in many countries are required to display unit prices. Even where it is displayed, shoppers often ignore it in favor of the total package price — which is why buying 'bulk' sizes sometimes costs more per unit than standard sizes on sale.

Calculating Unit Price

Unit Price = Total Price ÷ Quantity

Examples:
  16 oz jar for $3.20: $3.20 ÷ 16 = $0.20/oz
  32 oz jar for $5.50: $5.50 ÷ 32 = $0.172/oz ← better value

  6-pack of water ($4.50): $4.50 ÷ 6 = $0.75/bottle
  24-pack of water ($14.00): $14.00 ÷ 24 = $0.583/bottle ← better value

  500g cereal at $4.00: $4.00 ÷ 500 = $0.008/g = $8.00/kg
  1kg cereal at $7.20: $7.20 ÷ 1000 = $0.0072/g = $7.20/kg ← better value

Why Bigger Is Not Always Cheaper

The conventional wisdom is that buying larger quantities saves money per unit. This is often true but not always. Retailers sometimes price standard sizes lower per unit than bulk sizes, especially when the standard size is on sale. Club stores (Costco, Sam's Club) offer genuine bulk savings on many products but not all.

Comparing unit prices also matters for different brands at the same size. Two 12 oz jars of peanut butter at $2.99 and $3.49 have unit prices of $0.249/oz and $0.291/oz. The $0.50 difference is actually a 17% premium for the more expensive brand.

Common Unit Price Traps

Multiple-unit pricing (3 for $5): the implied unit price is $1.67, but you usually only need to buy one to get that price. Check whether you must buy the bundle to get the deal, or if buying one at $1.67 is available.

Different base units: comparing products priced per fl oz vs per mL requires conversion. 1 fl oz = 29.57 mL. A product at $0.10/fl oz costs about $0.0034/mL or $3.40/liter. A product at $0.008/mL costs $8/liter — the first is cheaper despite a higher per-fl-oz number.

Quick Tips

  • Always check the shelf tag unit price label if available. In many countries, this is required by law.

  • Compare products using the same base unit. If one is per oz and another per lb, convert: 1 lb = 16 oz.

  • Factor in waste: if a large container spoils before you finish it, the effective unit price is higher.

  • Coupons reduce effective unit price. Compare: $3.49 for 16 oz with a $0.50 coupon = $2.99 = $0.187/oz, which may beat the bulk size.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the unit price label in the store?

Many grocery stores display a small label showing price per oz, per 100g, or per item alongside the regular price tag. This is the unit price. It makes comparison instant without calculation.

How do I compare products in different units?

Convert to a common unit. oz and g: 1 oz = 28.35 g. fl oz and mL: 1 fl oz = 29.57 mL. Then calculate price per gram or mL.

Is the store brand always cheaper per unit?

Usually, but not always — especially when name brands are on sale or have coupons. Unit price comparison is the only way to know for certain.

Does unit price matter for non-food products?

Yes — detergent (price per load), toilet paper (price per sheet or per 100 sheets), and personal care products all benefit from unit price comparison.
