What Are Business Days?

A business day is any weekday that is not a public holiday — in most countries, Monday through Friday. Saturdays, Sundays, and recognized public holidays are excluded. The exact definition can vary by jurisdiction, industry, and even individual contract terms, but the Mon–Fri rule is standard in the vast majority of commercial and legal contexts.

Business days matter for a wide range of situations: invoice payment terms, loan disbursement windows, shipping estimates, contract notice periods, and legal deadlines. When a contract specifies '30 business days', that means 30 Mon–Fri days — not 30 calendar days, which is a difference of about 8–9 days.

Business Days vs. Calendar Days

A calendar day is any day of the week, including weekends. A business day is only a weekday (Mon–Fri). Over a calendar week of 7 days, only 5 are business days. This means a period of '10 business days' spans approximately 2 calendar weeks.

The confusion matters in practice. A vendor who promises '5 business days' delivery on a Thursday will likely deliver the following Thursday or Friday — not the following Tuesday. Always clarify which type of day is meant in time-sensitive agreements.

How to Count Business Days

Simple method (no holidays):
  1. List all dates from start to end (inclusive)
  2. Remove Saturdays (day = 6) and Sundays (day = 0)
  3. Count the remaining days

Formula approach:
Full weeks × 5 + days in partial week

Example: Mon Jan 6 to Fri Jan 17 (2025):
Total calendar days: 12 (Jan 6–17 inclusive)
Weekend days: 4 (Jan 11–12, Jan 18–19 — wait, 18-19 is outside range)
Weekends within range: Jan 11 (Sat), Jan 12 (Sun) = 2
  Business days: 12 - 2 = 10

Public Holidays and Business Days

Most definitions of 'business day' also exclude recognized public holidays. However, holidays vary significantly by country, state/province, and industry. US federal holidays (10 per year) differ from state holidays, and many private employers observe additional days.

When precision matters — for legal notices, financial transactions, or international contracts — always specify which holiday calendar applies, or use calendar days to avoid ambiguity.

Quick Tips

  • 30 calendar days ≈ 22 business days; 60 calendar days ≈ 43 business days.

  • For international contracts, specify the jurisdiction's holiday calendar explicitly.

  • When in doubt, use calendar days — they are unambiguous.

  • The business days calculator on this site excludes only weekends, not public holidays. Subtract holidays manually for precise counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Friday count as a business day?

Yes — Friday is a standard business day (Mon–Fri). In some industries (financial markets, banking), certain Fridays may be observed as holidays, but Friday itself is not a weekend day.

Are business days the same in all countries?

No. In most Western countries the business week is Mon–Fri. In some Middle Eastern countries (e.g. Saudi Arabia, UAE traditionally), the workweek runs Sun–Thu or Mon–Thu. Always confirm when dealing internationally.

What does '3 business days' mean for shipping?

For a package shipped on Monday with a '3 business day' estimate: Day 1 = Tuesday, Day 2 = Wednesday, Day 3 = Thursday. Arrival is expected Thursday. If shipped Thursday: Day 1 = Friday, Day 2 = Monday, Day 3 = Tuesday. Weekends are skipped.
